Day 2: The Foresight of a Mother

The woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She saw that he was a special baby and kept him hidden for three months. But when she could no longer hide him, she got a basket made of papyrus reeds and waterproofed it with tar and pitch. She put the baby in the basket and laid it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile River.-Exodus 2:2-3 New Living Translation

Moses is one of the most influential men in the Bible. The exploits of Moses in the Old Testament are legendary. Not only is he known for declaring before the King of Egypt “Let my people go”. He is also known for leading the people of Israel through the Red Sea and through the wilderness. However, Moses’ story could have ended right after his birth. Not only was Moses born into slavery. He was born during a time when the King of Egpyt declared the infanticide of Israelite babies to be lawful.

At that time, there were many mothers who were willing to give up their newborn sons to destruction, but the mother of Moses refused to do so. Moses’ mother saw that Moses “was a special baby and kept him hidden for three months”. This mother had the foresight and intuition to recognise that baby Moses was special. She recognised that Moses was not only special to her and her husband but special to the people of Israel and therefore, it was necessary to defy the law of the King of Egypt.

How many of us have been saved by our mother’s foresight or intuition. How many of us have been saved by the foresight and intuition of a woman in our lives. It may have been our partner or a teacher or a neighbour, but one thing is certain: Women are special.

One of the reasons why there are special is the foresight that they exhibit to help and save those around them.
